Mumbai, July 2, 2026: Jio Payments Bank Limited (JPBL) has commenced operations under the FASTag Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at the Manoharpura Fee Plaza on National Highway 48 in Rajasthan, marking a significant step towards barrierless toll collection on India’s highways.
JPBL, a digital-first payments bank and a subsidiary of Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL), said the new system will enable vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion on the busy Delhi-Jaipur corridor.
The rollout follows a contract awarded to the bank by Indian Highways Management Company Limited in October 2025. Under the agreement, JPBL was tasked with managing toll processing operations for India’s pilot MLFF project at the Shahjahanpur and Manoharpura toll plazas located between Gurugram and Jaipur.
The operationalisation of the Manoharpura Fee Plaza marks a key milestone in the deployment of technology-driven mobility payment solutions. Strategically located on NH-48, one of the country’s busiest highway corridors, the toll plaza has been designed to handle an estimated annual traffic volume of nearly 8.8 million vehicles.
JPBL currently manages a connected tolling corridor spanning approximately 100 kilometres between Shahjahanpur and Manoharpura, along with a further 34-kilometre stretch between Manoharpura and Daulatpur.
Barrierless Toll Collection
The Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system is considered a major advancement in highway infrastructure, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop or slow down at toll plazas. The system combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based FASTag infrastructure to automatically identify vehicles, classify them and process toll payments while they continue travelling at normal highway speeds.
Industry experts believe the adoption of MLFF technology could significantly improve traffic efficiency by reducing travel time, lowering fuel consumption and minimising congestion at toll collection points.
The system is also expected to generate broader economic benefits through improved fleet utilisation, faster freight movement and lower logistics costs, contributing to increased productivity and sustainability across the transportation sector.
Strengthening India’s Mobility Payments Ecosystem
Commenting on the development, Vinod Easwaran, Managing Director and CEO of Jio Payments Bank Limited, said the commencement of MLFF operations at Manoharpura represents an important milestone in the bank’s growing role within India’s mobility payments ecosystem.
According to Easwaran, the increasing digitisation of highway infrastructure is creating opportunities for technology-enabled tolling solutions that enhance commuter convenience while strengthening the country’s digital public infrastructure.
He said the transition to barrierless tolling would transform how mobility infrastructure is managed and monetised by enabling seamless vehicle movement, reducing congestion, lowering fuel consumption and improving logistics efficiency. These benefits, he added, are expected to help reduce transportation costs and improve overall national productivity.
Collaboration with Jio Platforms
For the end-to-end implementation of the project, JPBL collaborated with Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), which served as the central project manager overseeing execution. The core software architecture and advanced instrumentation required for the MLFF system were deployed by Tecsidel India Private Limited.
Debasish Debsikdar, Senior Vice President and Business Unit Head – Transportation, Traffic & Tolling at Jio Platforms, described India’s transition to MLFF tolling as more than just a technological upgrade.
He said the shift aligns with the Government of India’s vision of creating a digitally connected, efficient and globally competitive transportation ecosystem. As the country moves towards barrierless tolling and eventually Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based pay-per-use road charging, digital connectivity, cloud infrastructure, intelligent transportation systems and secure payment platforms will become increasingly important.
Debsikdar added that Jio’s nationwide connectivity infrastructure, cloud and edge computing capabilities, AI-driven platforms and next-generation devices position the group to play a key role in supporting this transformation.
Preparing for Nationwide Rollout
Following the successful operationalisation of the Manoharpura plaza, Jio Payments Bank said it is well-positioned to support the wider rollout of barrierless tolling infrastructure across India. The initiative is also expected to pave the way for future GNSS-enabled road pricing models, helping accelerate the country’s digital infrastructure transformation.
The company believes the adoption of advanced tolling technologies will contribute to building safer, smarter, greener and more efficient transportation networks while enhancing the overall travel experience for millions of road users across the country.
