The Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) and Bank of America have launched the Lighthouse Initiative, a dedicated investment platform aimed at accelerating private-sector investment in nature and biodiversity solutions. Managed by Eurazeo through its Future Industries Fund III, the initiative was launched on September 23, 2026, with $40 million in capital commitments.
Bank of America and Eurazeo are cornerstone investors in the initiative, which seeks to mobilise private capital for nature-based solutions and business models that remain significantly underfunded. The platform is designed to attract additional investors and partners, expanding its scale and global reach.
The initiative aims to advance the vision of the Sustainable Markets Initiative by supporting private-sector investment aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Investment Focus
The Lighthouse Initiative will make minority investments in project development platforms and technology-enabled solutions across developed and emerging markets. Its investment strategy will focus on four key areas:
- Ecosystem Protection and Nature Regeneration: Supporting businesses that protect ecosystems and restore nature at scale, including regenerative agriculture and forestry initiatives that improve soil health and biodiversity.
- Nature-positive Industrial Transition and Supply Chains: Promoting sustainable alternatives to conventional materials and inputs, including bio-based materials, biological agricultural inputs, circular processes and solutions that reduce pollution and resource extraction.
- Nature Finance Ecosystem Development: Building financing platforms that can attract institutional investors, development finance institutions and public-sector partners.
- Transparency and Impact Measurement: Supporting technologies and tools for monitoring, reporting and verifying biodiversity outcomes, including eDNA-based monitoring, digital MRV platforms and supply-chain traceability solutions.
The initiative aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, with each investment expected to contribute to at least one of its targets, including Target 3, commonly known as “30×30”, which aims to conserve and manage at least 30% of the world’s terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine areas by 2030.
It also aligns with the SMI’s Terra Carta, launched in 2021 by the former Prince of Wales, which seeks to place sustainability at the centre of private-sector activity.
The Lighthouse Initiative will be managed by Eurazeo’s Future Industries team, which invests globally in sustainable industries, including nature and biodiversity. Investments will be assessed through Eurazeo’s impact framework, supplemented by dedicated biodiversity indicators such as biodiversity footprint assessments.
Leadership Perspectives
Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, President and Global Envoy of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to mobilising private capital for nature and nature-based solutions, highlighting nature as a fundamental pillar of the economy.
Brian Moynihan, Chair and CEO of Bank of America and Chair of the Sustainable Markets Initiative, said businesses and investors are increasingly seeking opportunities in nature and biodiversity, adding that Eurazeo’s investment experience could help unlock further opportunities.
Matthieu Bonamy, Partner, Future Industries at Eurazeo, said biodiversity remains one of the most underfunded investment themes despite being fundamental to industry. He added that the initiative aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of protecting and restoring nature at scale and attract more investors to nature-positive businesses.
The Lighthouse Initiative represents a new effort to bridge the biodiversity financing gap by combining private capital, investment expertise and innovative business models to support nature conservation and restoration globally.
