The NSS Unit of Maitreyi College, University of Delhi, in collaboration with Cure India and the Rotaract Club of Delhi Midtown, organized a heartwarming celebration titled ‘Illuminating Lives: A Diwali of Hope and Inclusion.’ The event was dedicated to the specially-abled community, promoting empathy, inclusion, and the true spirit of Diwali — spreading light, hope, and togetherness.
🔹 A Celebration of Inclusion and Humanity
The event brought together volunteers, social organizations, and specially-abled individuals to celebrate Diwali in an atmosphere of compassion and equality. The initiative aimed to strengthen social awareness among youth while creating a platform where joy and humanity transcended physical or social barriers.
🔹 Distinguished Guests and Messages of Hope
The event was graced by Dr. Mathew Varghese, Rtn. Raman Bhatia, and Rtn. Arun Rangoota as chief guests. They lauded the college’s efforts in promoting inclusivity and emphasized the importance of collective action in building a compassionate society.
Prof. Smriti Singh, NSS Convenor, highlighted how the event fostered collaboration between Rotaract members and NSS volunteers, encouraging students to engage directly with the specially-abled community and their families.
🔹 Activities and Performances
Throughout the celebration, NSS volunteers interacted with visually challenged participants and children with special needs, engaging in games, music, and storytelling sessions that spread laughter and warmth. The program also featured inspiring cultural performances, followed by the distribution of thoughtful gifts and essentials by Cure India.
The day culminated in heartfelt conversations and moments of shared happiness, truly embodying Diwali’s message — victory of light over darkness and hope over despair.

Dr. Babita Chaudhary, Media Coordinator from the Department of Sociology, described the event as “a lifetime experience for students — a reminder that the real joy of festivals lies in giving, sharing, and understanding.”
She added that the event successfully reflected the spirit of Diwali as a festival of inclusion, compassion, and human connection, inspiring everyone present to contribute toward a more equitable world.
