Dublin, 25 November 2025: The Embassy of India in Ireland hosted a high-profile hybrid event titled “Emerging Opportunities in 8 Jewels of North Eastern India”, bringing global attention to the rapidly transforming trade and tourism landscape of the region. The programme witnessed participation from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Invest India, the Irish Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Enterprise Ireland, county-level Chambers of Commerce, and several business delegates from India and Ireland.

Senior officials from MDoNER and Invest India made a detailed presentation showcasing the economic potential, cultural richness, ecological diversity, indigenous handloom and handicraft heritage, and unique investment opportunities available across the eight North Eastern states. The presentation also highlighted the swift socio-economic transformation underway in the region and the favourable policy framework designed to boost commercial engagement and tourism.

India’s Ambassador to Ireland H.E. Akhilesh Mishra underscored the timeliness of the initiative, noting that Ireland is the Partner Country for the Nagaland Hornbill Festival this year—a landmark development in cultural diplomacy and tourism cooperation. He drew attention to the strategic shift in New Delhi’s approach to the region, from “Look East” to “Act East”, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ambassador Mishra emphasized that the North Eastern states now hold a central position in India’s overall development roadmap, supported by massive investments in air connectivity, highways, multimodal logistics, and bridges. These initiatives have significantly improved accessibility, opening new avenues for both domestic and international investors. He also highlighted the cultural integration fostered through “Ek Bharat – Shreshtha Bharat,” NCC activities, and Khelo India, which continue to strengthen emotional bonds between the Northeast and the rest of the nation.

Calling the region a rising destination for niche tourism, the Ambassador recommended focused promotion of North East India among high-spending international travellers, particularly for adventure, eco-tourism, and wellness tourism on the lines of the Bhutan model. He further underlined the region’s unique opportunity to expand into Western markets for organic produce, herbal medicine, textiles, and handicrafts, with the condition that maximum value addition must take place locally before export to ensure sustainable income for the people of the region.
